I Found a better way to a weed-free garden, you can too

Every home gardener knows the feeling. You spend your weekend planting beautiful flowers and fresh vegetables, only to look out a few days later and see weeds aggressively taking over your beds.

That’s exactly what I experienced last month when I helped plant flowers in a garden in the Montreal area. The flower bed had been prepared by someone else a month earlier and was already full of weeds. I weeded the bed and planted flowers around an annual shrub. But couldn’t apply Liquid Mulch right away. When I came back about two weeks later, the bed was full of weeds again.

The only solution was spending time on my knees pulling weeds all over again. Typically many people would use heavy, expensive bags of wood mulch here. But last year they experienced Liquid Mulch for the first time in this yard and really wanted to use it again because it was so much easier and quicker to apply. And, of course, because it works incredibly well. I have been using Liquid Mulch myself for many years now and will never switch back to landscape fabrics, wood mulch, or chips.

Fortunately, Liquid Mulch is a modern, eco-friendly alternative designed and made right here in Canada.

So here is what I did.

I opened my pail of Black Liquid Mulch for Landscaping and mixed it at 5:1 ratio (1 L of the Liquid Mulch with 5 L of water) in a pail. I mixed it using a stick and then poured it using a watering can around the flowers in half of the flowerbed.

Here is what the finished flowerbed with the black Liquid Mulch for Landscaping looks like.

Naturally, I weeded the flower bed again before pouring the Liquid Mulch over the soil. That is because the Liquid Mulch doesn’t kill the weeds. It simply prevents new weed seeds from taking root and it keeps the bed up to 95% weed free.

The Result:

The left third of the flowerbed was not treated with Liquid Mulch for Landscaping while the right two thirds was treated. Two weeks later, the side with the Liquid Mulch was still weed free while the side without it needed to be weeded again.

If you, like me, are tired of the backache that comes with weeding all summer long, here are three reasons why I love using Liquid Mulch for Landscaping. It will transform your gardening routine (like it has already done for me and for many other people).

1. It is Really Easy to Use

Simply dilute it and pour it over the soil, making sure that the entire surface is covered. There is no hauling of heavy bags and no back-breaking spreading of wood chips or bark. The small flower garden was completely done in less than 10 minutes and it was less expensive too!

2. It Keeps Weeds Out!

Studies at Cornell University and several tree nurseries agree with our own studies that Liquid Mulch for Landscaping reduces weeds by up to 95%.

3. It Locks in Critical Root Moisture

Watering your garden during hot Canadian summer spells can feel like a losing battle. Uncovered soil loses moisture rapidly to evaporation, forcing you to water daily or even more often. Liquid Mulch acts like a breathable skin over your garden bed. It slows down evaporation dramatically, keeping the soil damp and cool around your plants' roots. You will cut your watering in half while keeping your plants hydrated and stress-free.

4. It is 100% Biodegradable and Made Locally

Many commercial weed barriers are made from heavy black plastics or fabrics that eventually end up in landfills and that make replanting very difficult. My Liquid Mulch for Landscaping is proudly Ontario Made using natural, sustainable plant-based resins. It is completely safe for your backyard vegetable patches, children, bees, and pets.

At the end of the growing season, it naturally degrades directly into the earth, adding healthy organic matter back into your soil. There is absolutely nothing to pull up or remove. Plus, if you’ve ever tried to transplant a new plant after a landscaping fabric was in place, you know how difficult that can be. Liquid Mulch makes it simple. Just dig your hole right through the Liquid Mulch layer and reapply a small splash to repair any damage in the film. I’ve done it many times.
